Overview:

Realizing the importance and scarcity of water resources in Jordan, the Ministry of Environment (MoEnv) has commissioned the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) to implement a monitoring program to monitor and assess the quality of water in different water resources in the kingdom through the "National Project for Monitoring Water Quality in Jordan". The MoEnv was able to accomplish remarkable achievements, in close cooperation with all concerned institutions and bodies, in the field of environmental protection locally and internationally, and has made great strides towards strengthening monitoring processes in order to protect water resources from any potential sources of contamination.

The "National Project for Monitoring Water Quality in Jordan" is one of the pioneer ongoing projects being implemented by MoEnv in close cooperation with RSS since 1986. The project is the first of its kind in Jordan in terms of its comprehensiveness, and is particularly important because it provides, through its different activities, vital and necessary information regarding the quality of different water sources in the Kingdom and the extent of their suitability for different uses. On the other hand, the project is considered as a complementary component to the efforts of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI) through the completion and expansion of the environmental control elements which is a key tributary to providing the information necessary to investigate the origin of pollutants resulting from human, industrial, and agricultural activities, and reduce its negative impact on the limited water resources in the Kingdom.

The project aims at monitoring different water resources in Jordan to verify the quality of such resources and its suitability for different uses. The specific objectives of the monitoring program are to:

Document the change of water resources quality over time. For this particular purpose, MoEnv and RSS cooperated to develop a data base for the project.
Determine the important physical, chemical (organic and inorganic) and microbial properties of the water in Jordan, such as pH, BOD₅, COD, TSS, TDS, TH, Color, Turbidity, EC, TSS, Cl, NH₄, SO₄, NO₃, NO₂, TKN, T-N, Ca, Mg, SAR, Na, HCO₃ TCC, TTCC, E. coli, algae, nematodes, and others heavy metals, FOG, Phenol, MBAS, TTHM, pesticides, herbicides and others.
Determine how matching the quality of water in Jordan with Jordanian standards requirements.
Identify the main reasons for water quality changes, whether such changes were positive or negative.
Identify pollution indicators for emergent situations and when necessary.

The project's action plan covered several water sources, distributed geographically to cover almost all governorates of the Kingdom, such as dams, Wadies, and ground water resources, as well as industrial wastewater, reclaimed domestic waste water and sludge produced from domestic waste water treatment plants. The project started in 1986 with monitoring Fifty one (51) sites for drinking water only, and then the project's action plan was expanded over the years to cover, in 2014, a hundred and twenty-three (123) sites. Water Studies Division (WSD) at Royal Scientific Society, manages and organizes all activities included in the project with a very high standard and under the supervision of qualified and well-trained staff.
